OUR RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

TokyoToyLab is a data-driven review site. Every product analysis is based on aggregated user data from multiple verified sources — not just our personal experience.

Data Sources

For each product or topic we cover, we systematically collect and analyze data from these six source categories:

  1. Amazon Japan (amazon.co.jp) — Japanese consumer reviews, star ratings, and verified purchase feedback in Japanese.
  2. FANZA / DMM — Japan’s largest adult product marketplace. Reviews, ratings, and sales ranking data.
  3. Reddit communities — English-language user discussions from subreddits including r/SexToys, r/OnaholeToys, and related communities. We track sentiment, recommendation frequency, and common discussion points.
  4. Manufacturer official sites — Product specifications, materials, dimensions, and design philosophy directly from makers including TENGA/iroha, Magic Eyes, Toy’s Heart, and We-Vibe.
  5. Kanojo Toys (kanojotoys.com) — International pricing, availability, and product details from our affiliate partner.
  6. Independent review sites — Professional reviewers, blog reviews, and aggregator sites like Trustpilot.

What We Report

For each product, our research profile includes:

  • Total data points: The number of reviews, discussions, and sources analyzed.
  • Overall rating: Aggregated from available star-rating sources.
  • Rating distribution: Breakdown of 1-5 star ratings where available.
  • Top positives: Most frequently praised features, with approximate mention rates (e.g., “quiet motor — mentioned by 72% of reviewers”).
  • Common concerns: Most frequently reported issues, with mention rates.
  • Best for / Not ideal for: User profile recommendations based on the data.
  • Official specifications: From manufacturer sources.
  • Pricing: From Japanese retail and international (Kanojo Toy) sources.

Limitations We Acknowledge

  • Japanese marketplace reviews (Amazon JP, FANZA) may not always be directly accessible — in those cases we note the data gap.
  • Mention rates are approximations based on available sample sizes.
  • Reddit sentiment analysis reflects the communities we survey, which may not represent all users.
  • We update research periodically, but data reflects the date noted in each article.
